Peruvian Naturals and Export Services
Posted on 15. Mar, 2011 by Colin.
SUMMARY: Fourth in a series detailing how I make money: Peruvian Naturals herbal supplements.
Alternate Title: Real World International Marketing
Before finishing my MBA I decided to work in Latin America. My intent in going back to grad school was to enter the consulting industry. However, I realized I had little chance coming out of UMSL. Those firms want Ivy League or comparable b-schools, not city branches of state schools. … Read more

Weightlifting in Latin America
Posted on 24. Sep, 2010 by Colin.
SUMMARY: I describe the weightlifting scene in Latin America and contrast it with America’s.
I prefer life in Latin America. However, not everything’s better. Weightlifting is frustrating. The culture isn’t as developed in Latin America. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Muscle Beach, and Pumping Iron made it mainstream in America only a generation ago. It diffuses to other countries later. Here’s the kind of stuff you see.
In Latin America, you typically see guys benching a bar with 25s on each side (95lbs), sometimes even less. … Read more

Alcohol and Sensitivity in Latin America
Posted on 11. Jul, 2009 by Colin.
SUMMARY: Explaining how alcohol and drunkenness is NOT controversial in Latin America. In fact, not much is.
Latin America is different from the States in this respect, and probably extreme. Alcohol doesn’t have a negative stigma at all. There was never a prohibition. People drink at a younger age – by law and social norms… Read more

My Favorite Bar in AQP
Posted on 30. Apr, 2009 by Colin.
SUMMARY: Pics of the coolest bar in downtown AQP.
La Tradición is great and I go to Deja Vu a lot. But El Balde is the coolest bar in Arequipa. It’s on San Francisco near Forum, Deja Vu, etc. The music’s funky, anything from Led Zepellin to The Gorillaz. Killer art deco. They make huge drinks served in buckets – 1 or 3 litres! The Torito is Red Bull and pisco (disgusting). I get one litre of Red Bull and cheap gin for S/. 18. That’s a whole can of Red Bull and a lot of gin!

The Final Word on Bricheras
Posted on 08. Apr, 2009 by Colin.
SUMMARY: After a year in Peru I explain what it means to be a brichera and categorize them into Type 1′s or Type 2′s.
In retrospect my first Peruvian girlfriend was a brichera given she offered to marry me. But the Peruvians said she wasn’t. She didn’t speak English and never had a gringo boyfriend. So my first bona fide, gringo-hunting brichera (an English-speaker studying tourism) came my last week in Arequipa … Read more
