It's a misconception that La Candelaria is safe during the day - it most definitely is NOT. People get mugged in daylight every day, too. Walking in groups is not necessarily safe, either. People, and I mean TOURISTS, need to plan for the worst. Don't walk around with your camera out. If you're taking pictures, bring a friend to watch over you. Put some small bills in your front pocket, and if you must carry more cash, hide it separately and WELL - best option is a leg wallet worn on the calf. Never carry your passport. Leave your iPhone / iPod at home. Don't take your laptop to the cafe. etc. etc.

At least when I left at the end of 2008, tourists were being mugged every day, day or night. Probably hasn't changed.

" I believe that once the city gets a handle on crime, La Candelaria will be one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world."

yeah, murals blaming the U.S. and pimping for commies will work out real, good real fast....

Wait, I have an idea, why not invite in the jihadis?

/sarcasm off
