Not Every Peruana Wants a Gringo
Posted on 25. Nov, 2008 by Colin in peru
Mike came to Arequipa to learn English. I knew his sister in Denver. We’ve been hanging out ever since he arrived and, as a joke, Nicolas actually gave him a key to our apartment. Mike has a girlfriend and doesn’t cheat, but he’s willing to be my wingman. We go out with the plan of him playing his position while I tell girls that Mike needs to practice his Spanish.
We went to a bar downtown last week. After being annoyed by some drunk Peruvian guy for twenty minutes, we joined a table of two young girls behind us. We talked for a long time. I don’t remember their names, or their faces so much. One was nineteen and the other was twenty.
The girls had a pitcher of pisco and Sprite when we joined them and we had our beers. We talked for an hour or so and ran out of booze. Mike and I offered to buy a pitcher of pisco and Sprite. After finishing it, we had a second. After two, we all decided it was time for bed. I got up to pay the bill at the bar. After paying, I turned around and the girls were gone. Mike said they bee-lined out as soon as I stood up. He walked after them for a second and called to them with a sarcastic “Bye?” They came back, hugged him, air-kissed, and said goodbye. By the time I’d returned from the bar, it was over.
NEWSFLASH: Not every Peruvian woman wants a gringo. In hindsight, I think these two had boyfriends. I’m not trying to be cool here – I’ve been taken advantage of for drinks before, but we were talking to them for an hour before we ever bought anything. For all the time invested, there wasn’t a whole lot of money spent. Everybody was laughing and engaged in the conversation the whole time. I think they had boyfriends and wanted to skip the inevitable goodbye, phone number exchange, kiss attempt, etc. They were right, because I was going to ask the slim one for her number.
What can you do? Get back out there.

I have to say that sometimes peruvian girls are fickle too, not all of them are so brash or overconfident. True many peruvian girls are quite straightforward and no nonsense kind of people, But I have had instances where I have befriended some and they would even put up roadblocks after meeting them several times and where trust wasnt an issue anymore. And this coming from a guy who is very well acclimatised to the peruvian way of thinking (12 plus years of coming and going)
